Decarbonization News, Horgen, Switzerland – April 27, 2026 — Dow (NYSE: DOW) and RDM Group have unveiled Multiboard CirculaRR, a pioneering fibre-based food packaging solution made entirely from recycled materials. This innovation combines recycled cartonboard with ISCC PLUS certified recycled plastic, advancing circular economy principles in the packaging sector while meeting stringent food-contact requirements.
The new Multiboard CirculaRR builds on RDM Group’s established Multiboard Barrier technology, produced at its Fiskeby, Sweden facility. It consists of recycled paper coated with approximately 5% advanced recycled polyethylene (PE).
This low polymer content ensures compatibility with existing mixed paper recycling streams, enabling efficient end-of-life processing and minimizing waste. The solution is suitable for demanding applications, including frozen foods (such as fish and cakes), fruit trays, and dry pet food.
Krzysztof Krajewski, Chief Sustainability and Innovation Officer at RDM Group, highlighted the breakthrough:
“Multiboard CirculaRR is a breakthrough packaging innovation that advances circularity in food packaging. Now its plastic part is certified as being made from recycled materials and is designed for recyclability.”
He emphasized the need to move beyond traditional silos between paper and plastic to accelerate shared goals of circularity and waste prevention.
Dow’s contribution centers on its expertise in circular polymers and advanced recycling technologies. Advanced recycling complements mechanical processes by converting hard-to-recycle plastic waste into high-quality building blocks, enabling food-contact-compliant applications with virgin-like performance. The plastic component carries ISCC PLUS certification via a mass-balance chain of custody, while the overall solution has received ISEGA approval for food contact safety.
Marian Gmenta, Senior Marketing Manager for Circular and Renewable Solutions at Dow Packaging & Specialty Plastics EMEA, noted:
“By combining RDM Group’s fibre-based packaging expertise with Dow’s circular polymer know-how, we have developed a food-contact-compliant packaging solution, exclusively from recycled materials, with broad application potential that supports brands and converters as they prepare for upcoming EU packaging requirements such as PPWR.”
The product has undergone independent assessment using 4evergreen’s testing protocols, confirming its recyclability within established paper systems. This is particularly timely as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates that all packaging on the EU market be recyclable by 2030, alongside targets for recycled content. Multiboard CirculaRR helps brand owners and converters meet these ambitions while upholding performance and safety standards.
RDM Group, a leader in recycled cartonboard production, integrates sustainability as a core business value. All its products use renewable fibres and are designed for full recyclability. Dow, a global materials science company with 2025 sales of approximately $40 billion, continues to invest in innovations that support a sustainable future across packaging and other sectors.
Multiboard CirculaRR will debut at interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany (7–13 May), at Dow’s booth (Hall 9, C24). This collaboration exemplifies how cross-industry partnerships can drive material innovation, enhance circularity, and support regulatory compliance in the transition toward a low-waste, resource-efficient economy.
By prioritizing recycled content and end-of-life design, the solution contributes to broader decarbonization efforts in packaging by reducing reliance on virgin fossil-based materials. This initiative reflects growing industry momentum to integrate circular design into everyday products, helping close material loops and minimize environmental impact across the food supply chain.
